Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Support Worker-Lived Experience

Seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with lived experience of social and emotional wellbeing concerns and recovery. Qualification not essential to start but we will support you to obtain a Certificate IV.

About the Position

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Support Worker - Lived Experience will work at headspace Port Adelaide, a service that aims to improve the wellbeing of young people aged 12-25, by providing support in the areas of mental health and wellbeing, physical health, alcohol and other drugs, work and study.


The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Support Worker - Lived Experience will provide peer work support to young people with mild-to-moderate mental health concerns and their family and friends. This will involve the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Support Worker, safely sharing their own recovery journey with others, offering hope and practical strategies for mental health recovery from the vantage point of experiential understanding


Your key responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Safely sharing your lived experience and recovery journey with others
  • Offering hope and practical strategies to young people about social and emotional wellbeing recovery
  • Assessing young people's health and wellbeing needs
  • Collaborating on care plans
  • Providing non-clinical supports such as referrals and advocacy 
  • Obtaining Certificate IV in Peer Work, Mental Health or Youth Work
  • Facilitating culturally appropriate groups for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander YP
  • Networking and liaising with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations within western Adelaide region

You will also have the opportunity to join our Aboriginal Leadership Committee which supports our workplace to be an organisation that honours and values Aboriginal peoples, their cultures, beliefs and histories by:

  • providing advice and information to our staff and management 
  • supporting Aboriginal staff to function healthily within the workplace 
  • advocating for Aboriginal people to address issues of social inequality and injustice
  • encouraging understanding of Aboriginal culture and experience among the staff through conversations and cultural awareness training  

About You

To be considered for this position you will need to meet the following criteria:


Essential Criteria

  • Due to the nature of this role, we are seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with a lived experience of social and emotional wellbeing concerns and recovery;
  • Candidates must be willing to safely share this lived experience with young people, colleagues, and stakeholders as relevant;
  • Candidates must be willing and have the skills to communicate with their Manager about their own wellness;
  • Must have or be willing to undertake within 18 months of commencing a minimum qualification of Certificate IV in Peer Work, Mental Health, or Youth Work (financially supported by Centacare)
  • Valid Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check (previously known as ‘Child-Related Employment Screening Clearance’)
  • Valid Driver's Licence 

Desirable Criteria 

  • Holds or working towards a Certificate IV in Mental Health, Youth Work or Community Services 
  • Experience in the community services sector and/or not-for-profit sector
