About the Position

The Trainer/Consultant will work in the ASCEND Suicide Intervention Service which provides support to young people, up to 25 years of age, who might be at risk of suicide or self-harm. This is done through the provision of primary (face to face) and secondary (telephone) consultation with young people and/or their parents/carers as to the level of risk of suicide and self-harm. A key component of the program is to provide training to government and non-government agencies to assist professionals to recognise, interpret and respond to suicidal and harming behaviours. Some of the day to day responsibilities of the Trainer/Consultant are to:

  • Outreach to undertake clinical assessments of the risk of suicide and self-harm in young people, in collaboration with their support people (i.e. teachers/workers/family)
  • Provide advice and support to educational and community organisations on the topic of youth suicide
  • Provide suicide risk assessment and management training workshops to schools, TAFE, universities and community organisations
  • Facilitate links between individuals and families with the mental health system or other support system
  • Promote suicide prevention messages in the community through participation in community events

Essential Criteria

  • Degree qualification in Social Work, or Psychology, or Nursing, or Occupational Therapy or similar 
  • Competence in developing, coordinating and delivering training and information sessions
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and the impact they have on young people and their families 
  • Ability to apply suicide risk assessment and mental health state examinations 
  • Department for Human Services (DHS) Child-Related Employment Clearance or the ability to obtain one
  • Valid Driver's Licence 

Desirable Criteria

  • Qualifications in workplace training and assessment 
  • Understanding of adult learning principles 
  • Experience working in a mental health setting
